Over the Downs from Saltdean, via Rottingdean and the B2123, Coldean Pharmacy is home to Brighton Clinics' pharmacist-led weight-management service. Consultation, prescribing and monthly reviews are all handled in person.

Saltdean is an active place, the Lido, the undercliff walk, the Downs on the doorstep, and GLP-1 based treatment works alongside that, quietening the appetite side so the activity finally shows on the scales. We review you in person every month.

Call 01273 605657 to arrange a free consultation, usually within the week.

Is there a weight loss clinic near Saltdean?

About 18 minutes over the Downs from Saltdean, via Rottingdean and the B2123, sits Coldean Pharmacy, home to Brighton Clinics' pharmacist-led GLP-1 clinic at 16 Beatty Avenue, Coldean, Brighton BN1 9ED. The free consultation, the prescribing and the monthly reviews all happen face to face with an independent prescriber. Call 01273 605657 or book online.

This page is written and clinically reviewed by the pharmacist team behind Brighton Clinics' weight-management service, led by Superintendent Pharmacist Brijesh Thaker (GPhC 2079034) with Kathryn Harries (GPhC 2057551), following NICE guidance on obesity, NHS guidance on obesity and NHS healthy weight guidance. Brighton Clinics is a GPhC-registered pharmacy, number 9010023. Treatment is not suitable for everyone, eligibility is confirmed only after a consultation and clinical assessment.

How does the injection change appetite, not just willpower?

Between the Lido, the undercliff walk and the Downs on the doorstep, plenty of Saltdean patients are already fairly fit, so the missing piece is usually appetite rather than activity. These medicines are weekly injections that copy the hormones your gut releases after a meal, one class acting on the GLP-1 receptor alone, the other on GLP-1 and GIP together. Food sits in the stomach longer, hunger quietens, and the snacking that undoes an active routine becomes far easier to resist. Diet and exercise still do the groundwork; the injection stops appetite fighting you.

Is one medicine class simply better than the other?

Not automatically, no, it depends on the person. A single-hormone GLP-1 medicine and a dual-hormone GLP-1/GIP medicine are both used at this clinic, and trial data shows meaningful average weight loss for many people on either, though averages describe a trial population, not a guarantee for you specifically. The better fit depends on your history, tolerance and clinical suitability, which your prescriber talks through properly rather than picking for you. Dosing for both starts low and rises gradually, and not everyone is suitable for treatment.

Am I eligible near Saltdean?

A BMI reading of 30 or more clears the NICE bar by itself; 27.5 clears it too alongside a condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea. Several ethnic backgrounds, South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean among them, qualify at a lower figure still, since health risks climb earlier. The Lido and the Downs might keep you fitter than most, but it's the actual numbers and history we check properly at your free consultation, not assumptions either way.

What side effects come with this treatment?

Nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea are common in the early weeks, generally settling within four to eight weeks as your body adjusts. Less often, gallbladder problems develop, and rarely, pancreatitis. We cover all of this honestly at the consultation, escalate the dose slowly to limit it, and see you face to face every month, useful if you're still walking the undercliff or swimming at the Lido while your body adapts, so any new symptom gets caught rather than ignored.

Is this available on the NHS?

The NHS can prescribe these medicines through a Tier 3 weight-management referral, but it's tightly rationed, with waits commonly stretching to many months. Ask your GP first if you can afford to wait. If the Downs walks and Lido swims haven't been enough on their own and you would rather start now, our version has no subscription and no contract behind it, just a monthly review with the same prescriber, stopping whenever you decide you've reached your goal.

Active Saltdean, and the last stubborn stone

Between Lido lengths, the undercliff walk towards Rottingdean and the Downs rising behind the town, Saltdean does not lack for movement, and that is often exactly the frustration. Activity builds fitness, but it rarely out-runs appetite on its own, and the last stone or two stays stubbornly put. GLP-1 treatment works the other side of the equation, quietening the food noise so the active life you already lead finally shows on the scales, while the monthly in-person review keeps the loss steady and safe: weight checked, side effects caught early, dose adjusted, next month handed over face to face. Eighteen minutes over the hill via Rottingdean and the B2123, parking at the door, and no contract holding you if you decide to stop.

How do I get to the clinic from Saltdean?

Head west on the A259 coast road towards Rottingdean, turn right up Falmer Road (B2123) over the Downs past Woodingdean to the A27 at Falmer, then go one junction west to the Coldean and Moulsecoomb exit for Coldean Lane and Beatty Avenue, about six miles and roughly eighteen minutes. There's free patient parking on-site for the monthly reviews, so the Downs crossing is the only part of the journey that takes any thought. Brighton Clinics, Coldean Pharmacy, 16 Beatty Avenue, BN1 9ED.

Common questions from Saltdean patients.

The honest answer is that you find out at the free consultation, where your actual numbers and history are checked properly rather than assumed from a form. NICE sets the bar at a BMI of 30, or 27.5 with a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnoea, lower again for some ethnic backgrounds, so it's worth coming along even if you're unsure.

Your BMI, your medical history and your current medicines are all reviewed properly by an independent prescriber, face to face, before any discussion of treatment. It's unhurried and there's no pressure either way, and if the honest answer is that treatment isn't right for you yet, we'll say so plainly.

That's confirmed at the consultation, not before. The two prescription-only options are semaglutide, a GLP-1 medicine known as Wegovy, and tirzepatide, a dual GLP-1/GIP medicine known as Mounjaro, and your prescriber recommends one only if it's clinically appropriate for you after a consultation and assessment.

It copies the hormones your gut releases after a meal, one class acting on GLP-1 alone, the other on GLP-1 and GIP together. Food sits in the stomach longer and hunger quietens, which helps most when the missing piece for active Saltdean patients is appetite rather than fitness.

For most patients, yes, when monitored properly. The dose starts low and increases gradually, and a face-to-face review every month tracks progress and catches anything unusual early. It isn't automatically suitable for everyone, which the free consultation is designed to establish honestly.

Generally yes. Nausea, indigestion, constipation or diarrhoea are the common early effects, usually settling within four to eight weeks. Gallbladder problems are less common, pancreatitis rarer still. Starting on a low dose and increasing gradually is designed to keep side effects manageable while you stay active.

Individual results vary considerably and are never a promise. Clinical trial data shows significant average weight loss for many people on these medicine classes, typically in the mid-teens to low twenties as a percentage of body weight by twelve to eighteen months, alongside the activity most Saltdean patients already do.

If you can wait, yes, it's free, and no referral is needed either way to see us. NHS Tier 3 referrals are tightly rationed though, and waits commonly run to many months. If you'd rather not wait, we offer the same treatment privately, with no subscription or contract.

Your weight, any side effects, whether the dose should change, and your next month's supply, handed over face to face in about ten to fifteen minutes. It's a proper check-in with the same prescriber, not a rubber stamp, and there's time to raise anything that's on your mind.

No, several weight-related conditions, including type 2 diabetes and sleep apnoea, actually lower the NICE eligibility threshold rather than ruling anyone out. Suitability still depends on your specific history and current medicines, properly reviewed at the free consultation before anything is recommended.

For most eligible patients, the free consultation and the first injection happen in one visit rather than two separate trips over the Downs. There's no waiting list behind that first appointment, so Saltdean callers are typically treated within days of first getting in touch.

Head over the Downs via Rottingdean and the B2123, about six miles and eighteen minutes door to door. Free patient parking is available on-site, and the road is well signed even for a first visit. Coldean Pharmacy, 16 Beatty Avenue, BN1 9ED.

Book online or ring 01273 605657, free consultations are generally available within the week. No referral needed, and if the answer is that treatment isn't right for you, we'll say so honestly, free of charge, rather than proceeding regardless, and there's never any pressure to book again.

No, plenty of patients come off it once they've reached and stabilised at their goal weight, under their prescriber's guidance. There's no subscription or contract, so the decision is genuinely yours. Call 01273 605657 or check the booking page for current pricing.

Information on this page is for general guidance. Suitability for GLP-1 weight loss treatment depends on BMI, medical history, and clinical assessment. A consultation determines whether treatment is appropriate.
